Success Story of Leo Fernandez
Leo Fernandez, a resident of Rongkhelan, Diphu, got interested in ARYA after attending training and receiving support for establishing a poultry unit and meat processing. This was a turning point in his life. Initially, he got 100 chicks, fed them, and within 50-60 days, he earned Rs. 16,500 by selling 40 male birds. He then bought 50 more chicks and continued rearing them. As he gained experience, he sold some male chickens to cover feed and maintenance costs.
He gradually increased his flock size, earning Rs. 18,000 per batch. Initially, he started with Rainbow Rooster, later expanding to Turkey, Quail, and Vanaraja breeds. He also built a low-cost hatchery unit using a thermostat, bulb, and thermocol box, costing around Rs. 2,000. Soon, he began hatching eggs and selling chicks in Diphu and nearby areas. His hatchery included Rainbow Rooster, Turkey, and Quail. Presently, he earns Rs. 20,000-30,000 monthly from poultry sales, eggs, and chicks.
For his innovations and hard work, he received the Best Farmer Award from the Director of Extension Education, Assam Agricultural University, during the Kisan Mela conducted by KVK, Karbi Anglong on February 26, 2019. Now, he has also established a meat processing unit and earns Rs. 4,80,000 annually. His success has inspired many youths in the area, leading them to approach KVK for training and guidance.
